What is Aloe vera?
Aloe Vera and hair care
There are more than 300 species of the aloe plant, but Aloe barbadensis (aka aloe vera) is the best recognized and is prized in the health and beauty industries for its healing features. The aloe vera plant is about one or two feet in height with prickly and bitter leaves, which act as a defense mechanism to keep animals and insects from eating the plant.
The leaves hold a gooey, translucent gel, also very bitter, and known all over the world for its incredible healing properties. This translucent gel is made up of about 96% water, some organic and inorganic compounds, a type of protein which contains 18 of the 20 amino acids found in the body and Vitamin C, B, E and A. Other parts of the aloe vera plant which are used include the 'sap', a yellow-colored latex liquid found on the skin of the plant.
One of the most crucial parts found in aloe vera gel is a complex carbohydrate known as acemannan. It lets nutrients reach the cells, nourish them while relieving them of toxins. Ayurveda, Chinese herbal medicine and British herbal medicine have all promoted aloe vera as a healer when applied or consumed orally. The spiky succulent plant grows in dry, tropical climates in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the southern and western parts of the United States. A long time ago people realized there was more to the plant. The gel and juice inside aloe vera is a popular herbal remedy that was used to treat everything from skin issues to digestive problems.
